AKKA and Nrupathunga Kannada Koota extend a warm welcome to all Kannada Associations to WKC 2012.

As you are all aware, Meravanige is an integral and eminent part of any AKKA World Conference.

“Folk Dances of Karnataka” is the chosen theme for AKKA 2012 Meravanige. The Meravanige Team would love for all participating Kannada Kootas to showcase various folk dance forms across Karnataka. Kannada Kootas are welcome to include any festival as part of your presentation (not a requirement).

Please find below, some of the folk dance forms and festivals for your reference. The folk dances picked by other Kannada Kootas are listed in the form. The list is updated as and when we receive this information. We would like to showcase as many unique folk dance forms as possible, for everyone to enjoy. So we request that you select a folk dance that has NOT been already picked by another Kannada Koota.

ಅಟ್ಲಾಂಟ ನೃಪತುಂಗ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕೂಟ

The name Nrupathunga  is attributed to Rashtrakuta King Nrupathunga Amoghavarsha I (9th Century A. D), though kannada and culture evolved earlier (as depicted in Halmidi inscription-5th century A. D), Its been recognized that it was "Kavirajamarga" -"Royal  Path for Poets" authored during the rule of King Amoghavarsha I by Srivijaya is the earliest available writing on  rhetoric, poetics and grammar in the Kannada language.

In an excerpt from Kavirajamarga, Srivijaya the poet of the king's court, the Kannada language theorist, has bosted about karnataka as -

ಕಾವೇರಿಯಿಂದಮ ಗೋದಾವರಿವರಮಿರ್ದ

ನಾಡದಾ - ಕನ್ನಡದೊಳ

ಭಾವಿಸಿದ ಜನಪದಂ....

ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾನೆ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿ ನೃಪತುಂಗನ ಆಸ್ಥಾನ ಕವಿ ಶ್ರಿವಿಜಯ ಕವಿರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ.

ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡಿನ ಕವಿಗಳು, ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರು-ಪಂಡಿತರಲ್ಲದೆ, ಸಾಮನ್ಯ ಜನ -

ಕುರಿತೋದದೆಯುಂ ಕಾವ್ಯಪ್ರಯೊಗ ಪರಿಣಿತ ಮತಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರೆಂದು ಹಾಡಿ ಹೊಗಳಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

....In here not only the scholars, Poets and laureates, but also common people recite poetry and were also great critics of  the time......

ಪಂಪ ಕವಿ ತನ್ನ "ವಿಕ್ರಮಾರ್ಜುನ ವಿಜಯ" ಆದಿಪೂರಾಣ ಕಾವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ -

ತ್ಯಾಗ, ಭೋಗ, ಅಕ್ಷರ ವಿದ್ಯೆ, ಸಂಗೀತಗೋಷ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ವಿಶೇಷಗಳಿಗೆ ಆಗರವಾದ ಮನುಷ್ಯರೆ

ಮನುಷ್ಯರು, ಅಂತಹ ಮನುಷ್ಯರು ಹುಟ್ಟಬೇಕಾದ ನಾಡು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಬನವಾಸಿ. ಹುಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಬೇಕು-

ಮನುಷ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಹುಟ್ಟದಿದ್ದರೆ ಚಿಂತೆ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಕೊನೇಪಕ್ಷ ಮರಿದುಂಬಿಯಾಗಿ -

ಕೋಗಿಲೆಯಾಗಿಯಾದರು ಬನವಾಸಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಧನ್ಯರಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

Thyaga, boga, akshara vidye, sangeethagoshtti mathu saamskruthika visheshagallige aagaravaada manushyare manushyaru, anthaha manushyaru huttabekada naadu karnatakada banavasi. Huttidare illi huttabeku- manushyaragi huttadidhare chinthe  illa, konepaksha maridumbiyaagi - kogileyagi yadaru banavasiyalli hutti dhanyaragbekendidhane.

To his petriotic spirits in glorification of banavasi in karnataka, poet Pampa says in his poetry "Vikramarjuna Vijaya" as  -

...Origin to combination of Renunciation, Physical luxury, art and culture in Human beings are Human beings, If one can't take birth in Karnataka as a human being, atleast born as tender bee or cuckoo would get satisfaction, ......

In the history of Karnataka, great dynasties like Mayura varma, Vishnuvardhana, Vidyaranya, Pulakeshi, Vikramadithya, Rashtrakoota, Chalyukya, Ganga, Hoysala, Ballala great poets like Pampa, Ranna, Harihara, Ragavanka, Sharanaru, Kuvaravyasa, Rathnakara, Dasaru, B. M. Shri, T. P. Kailasam, A N Kru, Rajarathnam, Kuvempu, Pu. thi. Narasimhachar, Masti Venkatesha Iyengar, Shivaram Karantha, Bendre, Chennaveera Kanive, G. S. Shivarudrappa, Shri Ranga, Chaduranga and many more has glorified kannada and its litereature immensely.
